Turning Wine Into Water

Rutherford B Hayes, 19th president of the United States, and his wife were fervent advocates of temperance. During Hayes’s presidency liquor and tobacco were banned from the White House. William M Evarts, secretary of state, observed of one official dinner, “It was a brilliant affair; water flowed like champagne.”
