With Hat Head in Hand

Marquise Marie du Deffand, famous salonière, and close friend of the literary giants of her day, including Voltaire, Montesquieu, Fontenelle, D’Alembert, and Horace Walpole, was cornered at one of her soirées . Cardinal de Polignac told Mme du Deffand at great length and in inordinate detail, the story of how Saint Denis was decapitated at Montmartre and then walked a whole league to the village named after him, carrying his head in his hands. Seeing his narrative was evoking no response, the cardinal exclaimed, “Do you deny that he carried his head in his hands for a whole league?”

“It’s only the first step that counts,” said Mme du Deffand.
